About

Whilst there has been a great deal of interest in Australia for the Araucana,  not much is commonly known about this unusual breed.  The thing that sets the Araucana apart from most other breeds of poultry is the fact that it lays Blue - Green eggs!  The Araucana is the only breed that naturally lays these uniquely coloured eggs.

We have found that depending on the colour of the bird, you will get varying colours in the egg shell.  From a beautiful sky blue from the lavender variety to green from the black Araucana & olive green from the partridge.  And no,  do not fear,  the yolks are not green!  They are still yellow the same as any other chicken.

The name Araucana is derived from the Arauca province of northern Chile, a part of South America that was never conquered by the Spaniards.

Crests & Muffling

An Araucana's crest is carried well back from eyes and is compact, without being too large or small.

The face is covered with thick muffling, beard and ear muffs are abundant, whilst the ear-lobes are moderately small they are also concealed by muffling. Wattles are minimal, preferable absent.

Serious defects: Crest too small or too large (e.g. Polish type crest).

Combs

comb

Araucana's have a pea comb.

A pea comb is a triple comb, resembling three single combs joined together at the base and rear, but distinctly divided, the middle of one being the highest.

Serious defects: include other than pea type in male, comb lopped or twisted and other than minimal in the female.

Toes & Legs

The legs of the Araucana are of medium length, strong and well apart, their shanks should be free from feathers.

An Araucana has four toes that should be straight and well spread.

Their colouring of the legs and toes is dependant of the colour of the plumage, all araucana have legs that are willow to olive or slate colouring, the only exception is the Cuckoo whose legs and feet are white with blue spots.

Serious defect: legs other than the colour mentioned here.

cockerel

Our experience has shown that some will be broody with very good mothering abilities,  whilst others are not at all interested.

They are very good layers and will normally be one of the first to begin laying in the new season after moulting & are very hardy and fertile.

Ear tufts (if present) originate from a gristly appendage arising from behind and just below the ear hole. The tufts of feathers, numbering from 5 to 15, grow from this pad. History

The name Araucana is derived from the Arauca province of northern Chile, a part of South America that was never conquered by the Spaniards.

The Araucana - pea-combed, crested, muffed and a producer of blue or green eggs, has developed primarily from the domestic fowl that were already in South America before the time of the Spanish conquest.

The original Araucana were rumpless (did not even have the parsons nose!) & tufted.  The ear tuft's were also amazing in that they sometimes would grow rearwards & form a ring around the birds head.  The Araucana we now have, commonly has muffs, crests & tufts.  In Australia the majority of the Araucanas are not rumpless, however the rumpless variety is recognised in the Australian stanndards and does have the ????crests etc?

The Araucana we have today is notably also known as the "Easter Egg Chicken" due to the fact that they have lost a lot of the features of the original breed except the egg colouring and ear tufts.
